description:
This painting is a not autograph replica of a portrait of marie-antoinette, Queen of France, painted by Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun and exhibited for the first time at the 1783 Salon de Paris. Later marie-antoinette gave it as a present to her friend Louise of Hesse-Darmstadt, Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine; the original 1783 painting is still in possession of Louise's heirs in Wolfgarten Castle (Hesse, Germany). This replica kept in the NGA is not considered an autoghaph painting by Vigée Le Brun, but it's probably a copy realized in her atelier or in the atelier du Cabinet du Roi.
