description: frederick sandys was one of the most prolific and gifted illustrators of the Pre-Raphaelite circle. This illustration appeared in The Shilling Magazine accompanied by a poem of the same title by Christina Rossetti, Dante Gabriel’s sister. The poem recounts the story of two reckless young lovers and the consequences of their irresponsible actions. The first stanza reads, Oh, where are you going with your love-locks flowing On the west wind blowing along this valley track? The downhill path is easy, come with me an’ it please ye, We shall escape the uphill by never turning back. (see references)

description: This illustration accompanied a poem of the same title by frederick Whymper">frederick Whymper. sandys captures the essence of the text, which is more of a reverie than a narrative. A beautiful young woman sits dreamily gazing out of a window. Victorian art is filled with such scenes of leisure, since women were largely confined to the domestic sphere during this period.
